History of Huntsville Madison County
Botanical Garden
The Huntsvill Botanical Garden was
started in 1979-1981 with community support and enthusiastic local
gardeners of Huntsville. A special and beautifully
illustrated book called “Wildflowers of North Alabama” was
published in 1987 to help fund building the Botanical gardens. In 1990,
the present 110-acre site was provided to the Garden through a
90-year lease from the U.S. Army through the Alabama Space Science
Exhibit Commission and the City of Huntsville.

Garden
The Huntsville Madison County Botanical Garden is
one of the more interesting Spring outings
in Huntsville and is filled with an array of native and wild
flowers, trees, plants, butterflies and insects of all species. The
Botanical Garden highlights different areas like The Aquatic Garden,
The Perennial Garden, the Annual Garden, the Daylily Garden, the
Central Corridor Garden, the Constitution Walk, the Demonstration
Vegetable Garden and Compost Demonstration Site.
Other interesting things to see at the Huntsville
Botanical Garden are the Fern Glade, Garden Railroad, Nature Trail,
Rose garden, Herb garden, and of course, the Butterfly House. Recently
a Tea Room has been added in the Botanical Garden, which provides
specialized green salads, delicious sandwiches, special snacks and
specialty teas to all tourists. Gourmet dishes for dining are available
in the Tea Room or in the private decks overlooking the Garden. You can
simply sit on the decks, and enjoy your food along with the
natural beauty of the Garden.

When you are at the Botanical Garden, you
should also visit other specialty gardens. While the Daylily Garden
cultivates 675 species of Daylilies, the Fern Glade Garden displays at
least 170 species of ferns along with spectacular waterfall,
magnificent ponds and unique gazebo. The Nature Trail and the
Wildflower Garden at Huntsville Botanical Garden provides an array of
footpaths, which leads through lowland forests areas filled with sweet
gums, black gums, sycamore and red maple trees.
The Garden Railway features a miniature European
village and model trains and a seasonal Butterfly House that hosts a
great variety of butterflies. The Huntsville Botanical garden is also
specially available for cocktail parties, business meetings, weddings
and other special occasions.
